Did you know?

The Spot-Billed Pelican, or Gray Pelican, prefers large inland and coastal waters, especially large lakes. It breeds in southern Asia from southern Iran across India to Indonesia. At a distance, they are difficult to differentiate from other pelicans. However, at close range the spots on the upper mandible are distinctive. In some areas, these birds nest in large colonies close to human habitations. This species is a colonial breeder, often breeding in the company of other waterbirds.

About the picture

I was at Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary just outside Mysore, Karnataka when I saw this Spot-Billed Pelican skimming the water with its beak to collect some water for drinking. The bird did this repeatedly. It was then that I saw that there were crocodiles close by. To avoid the crocs, the bird satiated its thirst through this unique method and I was glad to be able to witness and take a photo.

Fun Fact

Contrary to what most people believe, pelicans do not carry water in their beaks to extinguish fires.
