Did you know?
The Indian River Tern is a resident breeder along inland rivers from Iran east to the Indian Subcontinent and further to Myanmar to Thailand. Unlike most Sterna terns, it is almost exclusively found in freshwater, rarely venturing even to tidal creeks. The Indian River Tern feeds by plunge-diving for fish, crustaceans, tadpoles, and aquatic insects in rivers, lakes, and tanks. Unfortunately, its numbers are decreasing due to the pollution of their habitat and it is now listed as a Vulnerable species.
About the picture
At Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary, the resident River Terns lay eggs on top of the rocks that jut out of the water. The chicks blend in so well with the rock and hide in the little crevices. It is only when a parent returns with fresh fish, that one can see these little chicks visibly. Here, the chicks can be seen running toward the parent demanding food.
Fun Fact
River Terns are fiercely protective of their nests and are known to dive-bomb and peck unsuspecting animals (even elephants) or humans who venture too close.
