The Short-Toed Snake Eagle spends more time in the air when compared to the rest of the members of its genus. The Snake Eagle loves soaring over hill slopes and hilltops and does much of its hunting from this position at heights of up to 500 m (1,600 ft). The Short-Toed Snake Eagle is found throughout the Mediterranean basin, into Russia and the Middle East, parts of Western Asia, and in the Indian Subcontinent, and also further east in some Indonesian islands.

About the picture

We were in Pune, Maharashtra when we saw this Short-Toed Snake Eagle sitting on a dark, round stone in an open area. The bird was probably hunting for snakes. He took off into the air, looking like a graceful ballet dancer.

Fun Fact

The Short-Toed Snake Eagle is a silent bird and only occasionally makes a musical whistle-type of call.
