There are three species of extinct tigers. Two of them, the Bali tiger and the Javan tiger, are from Indonesia, and the third, the Caspian tiger, is from Eurasia. All three species have been extinct for at least three decades. Tiger populations have been declining for many years, and the main reasons for these extinctions are poaching, habitat loss, and other human-caused conflicts.

About the picture

This male tiger was photographed in Ranthambhore National Park in 2017. One afternoon, during a safari, we saw him at a distance, walking towards us. We took a position in anticipation of him coming right in front of us. Our intuition was right, and we were lucky to see him walk majestically head-on.

Fun Fact

The Latin name for the tiger is Panthera tigris. The word Panthera is from the Greek word meaning ‘hunter’, while Tigris is an old Persian word meaning ‘fast’ or ‘arrow-like’.
