Did you know?

Asian Elephants have a very large and highly developed neocortex, a trait also shared by humans, apes, and certain dolphin species. They have a greater volume of cerebral cortex available for cognitive processing than all other existing land animals. Results of studies indicate that Asian elephants have cognitive abilities for tool use and tool-making similar to great apes.

About the picture

Elephant herds congregate at the Kabini Backwaters to drink, bathe, and play. During one such safari, we saw this herd in formation where the adults form a protective barrier around the young calves, especially if they perceive a threat. Watching elephants interact with the other members of their herd is fascinating and I enjoy spending time in their midst.

Fun Fact

Unlike African Elephants, Asiatic Elephants use their feet to dig or kick.
