Did you know?

The Blue-Rumped Pitta is a shy, earthen-toned ground bird with a rotund, barrel-chested appearance. Both sexes are brown overall with a mossy green back and electric powder-blue nape. However, the female has slightly duller colours.

About the picture

This male Blue-Rumped Pitta was foraging for insects and bugs and jumped onto a small rock in Cat Tien National Park, Vietnam when I photographed him.

Fun Fact

Only four out of the 44 species of Pitta are fully migratory. Several more are partially so, though their migrations are poorly understood.
