The Bar-Bellied Pitta is found in the seasonal tropical forests of Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. The main identifier is the horizontal bars on the bird’s belly. Males have a green crown and a very distinctive black band from the eyes to the nape. In females, the head and neck are brown.

This gorgeous male Bar-Bellied Pitta was perched on a rock, looking resplendent. The photograph was taken in April at Cat Tien National Park in Vietnam.

There are 44 species of Pitta across Asia, Australasia, and Africa. All of them are similar with distinct differences that help in identification. Four out of the 44 species are fully migratory.
