Did you know?

Baobabs are long-lived deciduous, small to large trees from 5 to 30 m (20 to 100 ft) tall with broad trunks and compact crowns. There are a total of eight species of Baobab. They are native to Madagascar, mainland Africa, and Australia. They are among the most long-lived of vascular plants and have large flowers that are reproductive for a maximum of 15 hours. The fruits are large, oval to round, and berry-like and hold kidney-shaped seeds in a dry, pulpy matrix.

About the picture

This photograph of the sun rising between the branches of a Baobab tree was taken in Botswana in 2018. The silhouette provided by the dry branches makes for a dramatic picture.

Fun Fact

Baobab flowers open around dusk and fade by the next morning. They open so quickly that the movement can be detected by the human eye!
