Did you know?
The Lechwe, Red Lechwe, or Southern Lechwe is an antelope found in wetlands of south-central Africa. They are golden brown with white bellies. The long, spiral horns are borne only by males. The hind legs are longer in proportion than in other antelopes to ease long-distance running when escaping from predators on marshy soil and in knee-deep marshy water. Lechwe feeds on aquatic plants and spend a lot of time in the water.
About the picture
This male Lechwe posed for me when I visited Chobe National Park in 2018. I like the confident look he is giving me.
Fun Fact
The Lechwe’s legs are covered in a water-repellant substance which allows them to run quite fast in knee-deep water.
