Did you know?
The Aberdare National Park is a protected area in the Aberdare Mountain Range in central Kenya located east of the East African Rift Valley. The park contains a wide range of landscapes - from mountain peaks that rise to 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) above sea level, to deep, v-shaped valleys intersected by streams, rivers, and waterfalls. At lower elevations, one can find moorland, bamboo forests, and rainforests.
About the picture
When I visited Aberdare National Park in 2012, the forest was lush green with plenty of water for the wildlife. I was at one such watering hole when a herd of elephants walked in. Usually, when someone thinks of Africa’s landscapes, their first thought will be of dry grasslands and not the lush foliage and tall trees that you can see in this photo. In fact, Africa has varied landscapes from dry deserts to dense green jungles.
Fun Fact
Aberdare National Park is best known as the site where in 1952, Princess Elizabeth became Queen after the death of her father King George VI, whilst staying at the Treetops Hotel.
