Did you know?

Lions are very social animals and are the most vocal out of all the big cats. Cubs are taught to use vocalisations from very early to communicate with each other, as well as to be aware of predators in the area. In fact, cubs can recognise their mother’s calls and vice versa.

About the picture

This photo was taken at dusk in 2022 when we were at Masai Mara, Kenya. 2-3 lionesses were walking with cubs when suddenly we could see 2 male lions at a distance. Spotting the lions and unsure if the lions were part of their pride or not, the lionesses started vocalising with their cubs. One of the lionesses got onto this termite mound to call her cubs closer to her, which is when I clicked this pic. Once the cubs were safe, one of the lionesses approached the male lions to investigate, and upon realising that the lions meant no harm since they were part of the same pride, all of them started walking together.

Fun Fact

Mountain Lions (also known as the Puma or Cougar) are not true lions. They are closely related to the Cheetah.
