The White Rhinoceros is the largest of all rhinoceros. It has a wide, square mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species. The White Rhinoceros consists of two subspecies: the Southern White Rhinoceros, with an estimated 15,942 wild-living animals in the year 2018, and the much rarer Northern White Rhinoceros. The northern subspecies has very few remaining individuals, with only two females, both in Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. Sudan, the world's last known male Northern white rhinoceros, died in Kenya on 19 March 2018 at age 45.

About the picture

This photo was taken in Lake Nakuru, Kenya, in 2022. This mother and calf were grazing on the fresh green grass that was growing around the lake. In the background, you can see hundreds of flamingos wading in the water.

Fun Fact

The White Rhinoceros depends on its sense of smell to alert against the presence of food, or a predator. The olfactory passages in a White Rhino are larger than its entire brain. It has the widest set of nostrils of any land-based animal.
