Kaziranga National Park, located in the Indian state of Assam, is one of the most important habitats for the endangered Bengal tiger. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for its successful tiger conservation efforts and plays a crucial role in the preservation of this majestic big cat species. The diverse landscape of Kaziranga, with its grasslands, wetlands, and dense forests, provides an ideal environment for tigers to thrive and roam freely. Apart from tiger, Kaziranga is also known world over for the endangered one-horned Rhonoceros.

About the picture

This image of the tigress was captured in Kaziranga National Park in February 2017. It is extremely difficult to sight and photograph a tiger in Kaziranga due to the presence of tall elephant grass. On this eventful day, during an evening safari, alarm calls of deer were heard. Moving in that direction, I realized that a tigress was crossing the road and heading towards tall grass. I followed the tiger and, after a long and patient wait, was rewarded with the lovely sight of the powerful tigress emerging from the tall grass for a few seconds before she went back inside.

Fun Fact

Modern tigers did not descend from prehistoric saber-tooth tigers. In fact, the two are not closely related at all.
