The Scaly-Breasted Munia or Spotted Munia is a sparrow-sized finch native to tropical Asia. Its name is based on the distinct scale-like feather markings on the breast and belly. The species is endemic to Asia and occurs from India and Sri Lanka to Indonesia and the Philippines.

About the picture

This image was taken on the outskirts of Bangalore when these birds after feeding. After initially bathing and drinking from a waterhole, this pair sat on this perch and exchanged food. A perfect opportunity was provided to take this family portrait.

Fun Fact

Scaly-Breasted Munias form flocks of as many as 100 birds. Researchers say that having large flocks reduces the time spent on predator vigilance, thereby increasing feeding efficiency.
